The 忍者Ninja in Feudal Japan: The period of the 16th Century was known as the “Golden Age of Ninjutsu 忍術.” During this time there was so much warfare between the various feudal Daimyo and such proliferation of the Samurai tradition that new arts and clans sprang up virtually overnight. Ronin, or masterless Samurai roamed the continent feely exercising their right to “kill and walk away” from any peasant who should be misfortunate enough to incur their displeasure. In an effort to end this mindless slaughter, unite the warlords into a nation, and make himself emperor, Ieyasu Tokugawa, a Samurai retainer of the Toyotomi clan, gathered his forces, engaged in secret treaties and negotiations, plots, counter-plots, and assassination to promote his own cause. Different Ninjitsu Schools: The following 忍術Ninjutsu schools are known: Bujinkan (Masaaki Hatsumi) Genbukan (Shoto Tanemura , Jinenkan (Fumio Manaka). Shurikenjutsu (手裏剣術) is a general term describing the traditional Japanese martial arts of throwing blades called shuriken. Shuriken, which are small, hand-held weapons used in feudal Japan of the samurai and ninja. Shurikenjutsu was usually taught among the sogo-bugei, or comprehensive martial arts systems of Japan, as a supplemental art to those more commonly practiced such as kenjutsu, sojutsu, bōjutsu and kumi-uchi (battlefield grappling) or jujutsu, and is much less prevalent today than it was in the feudal era. LA Taikai 1988 Everyone came to LA to witness the extremely well know Japanese martial artist in Hollywood. I’m not sure if they did bojutsu in Japan before this demo but… I do have a short clip I filmed before the demo early that day of Hatsumi sensei and his group warming up for the demo too. Never the less.. The awesome bojutsu skills of Muramatsu shihan and Ishizaka shihan shown at demo as Hatsumi sensei comes on and does muto dori with Sano Shihan. My opinion is this was the first huge display of Hatsumi sensei Bujinkan Dojo to the world. The 1988 Taikai was awesome and the weather was beautiful the full 4 days. The very nice brownish air was always lurking over head from the LA city smog.
