To start each class you have to start with the correct frame of mind. Start each class knowing that you are there to train your mind, body and spirit as one. This is a very short clip expressing the start of a class here at the hombu, dedicated to the art of Traditional Samurai Bujutsu and Authentic Ninjutsu. We start each class with a Bow in, Shiken Haramitsu Daikoumyo (四拳波羅蜜大光明) this is the sensation and the harmony perceived by the sense of hearing and heart, to understand this, is to also understand that for every step that I take, I am placing myself one step closer towards my enlightenment. after the traditional bow in, we then start with kihon (basics) to warm up the body now that we are focused, this video is a short clip of some of the dakentaijutsu drills (striking body drills) that we would do to start the class. Kokoro is a common Japanese word that carries meanings conveyed by the English words “mind” and “heart.”. Since traditional Japanese thought the heart was where psychological function took place, the character conveyed a range of meanings; Kokoro, then, has three basic meanings: the heart and its functions; mind and its functions; and center, or essence of oneself. In the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo we train with the correct spirit (keiko) in the old methods of bujutsu and apply those teachings to the modern day. By taking these old lessons that the masters have left us and applying them not just to the fighting aspects but who we are as people this gives a different meaning and feeling to us as people, by having this feeling and developing a strong mind, body and spirit in the way of the warrior, one then understands the basic growth of Kokoro – 心
